Discover the main structural steel profiles

Conheça os principais perfis estruturais do aço

Around the world, along with concrete and cement, steel is one of the materials most used in civil constructionIts composition makes it very strong and light, which is perfect for supporting large buildings.

The shape of the material and the way it's applied are also relevant factors. In this sense, there are different structural profiles for steel parts used in construction.

Simply put, the profile of a beam or other steel member is its shape, which affects how weight is distributed throughout the member. Some shapes are more resistant to pressure from certain angles, making each profile more suited to a specific type of demand.

Depending on the construction, several types will certainly be used together. There are three most common structural steel profiles: angle (also called L), simple U, and stiffened U.

Interested and want to learn more about each of them and their applications? Keep reading and find out exactly what you need to know!

Corner or L

The names of steel profiles are direct references to their shape. Therefore, an L-shaped beam is a beam with exactly this shape, with two perpendicular plates.

The function of corners It's not meant to serve as the main source of support, but rather as reinforcement for the main beams. You'll see some of these pieces supporting others or connecting different main parts of the structure, such as pillars or beams.

This prevents these parts from flexing excessively and distributes the applied force throughout the structure. This prevents damage, reduces twisting, and increases the structure's durability.

Simple U

Of all the structural profiles of the steel, the U is one of the most common, especially since it has three variations: plain, stiffened, and laminated, depending on its application. However, the first two tend to be more commonly used.

The model Simple U It follows the same logic as the L-shaped structure, with three plates forming its shape. It's one of the most versatile pieces available, suitable for both large construction projects and small domestic projects. Furthermore, it's highly durable, making it widely used in mechanical installations and traffic signs.

U stiffened

This variation of the U-shaped profile is made from a rolled steel plate, which is bent into a U shape. It is very similar to the previous one, but with internal folds in the open part.

The model U stiffened, as the name suggests, is even stronger than the simple model. It's ideal for most large buildings and commercial establishments with heavy mechanical structures. Its weight is similar to that of the simple model, so there's no extra pressure on the structure.
